The James D. Marshall Legacy Society
Individuals who remember Goodwill as a beneficiary through a will, living trust, life insurance policy or other estate planning option are recognized as a member of the James D. Marshall Legacy Society. Honoring the legacy of James D. Marshall, Sr., long-time board member, we encourage you to leave your own legacy and help further establish Goodwill as a pillar of strength in the lives of individuals who desire the power of work.
About James D. Marshall, Sr.
James D. Marshall established himself in the Kansas City community as a philanthropist and devoted volunteer to several organizations, providing leadership and guidance. He believed that all individuals had a desire to be part of the workforce, be self-sustaining an in doing so, contribute to the betterment of our society.
His ongoing commitment to Goodwill helped build a strong foundation for the Agency. James served as Chairman of the Board of The Helping Hand Institute, an organization founded in 1894 as a symbol of hope to thousands of homeless and destitute men and women by creating programs to provide work. He also served as Chair of the Board of Goodwill Industries of Greater Kansas City, an organization founded in 1925, with principles of employing individuals with disabilities to repair donated household goods to offer for sale in their retail establishments. In 1978, Mr. Marshall was instrumental in the consolidation of The Helping Hand Institute and Goodwill Industries of Greater Kansas City to become The Helping Hand of Goodwill Industries, where he served as the first Chair on the Board of Directors. He has left a legacy in the Kansas City community that empowers individuals who are disabled and disadvantaged achieve their vocational potential through work.

Life Insurance policy – This option can provide a significant future gift to Goodwill at an affordable present cost to you. Many individuals own some form of life insurance because of its unique ability to meet a variety of needs for financial protection, but its role in planned charitable giving is unfortunately frequently overlooked.
Giving a new or existing policy provides a tax deduction for the present face value of the policy and/or the future premiums you pay if Goodwill is named as beneficiary and owner of the policy. (Simply designating Goodwill of Western Missouri & Eastern Kansas as beneficiary does not result in a tax deduction)
