We’re celebrating 120 years of empowering jobseekers in Kansas City! It all started with the Helping Hand Institute which was founded in 1894 to provide food and housing for destitute men, women and children. Men earned wages doing jobs such as breaking rocks at quarries, salvaging waste material and baling paper. Others worked at the Helping Hand Farm raising crops to feed the Institute’s residents. In 1902 Goodwill Industries was formed in Boston by Rev. Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister and early social innovator. Helms collected used goods and trained and hired people with disabilities or disadvantages to repair them. The repaired items were sold in stores to support the program. In 1925 Goodwill Industries of Greater Kansas City was founded. The first Goodwill store and repair shop opened at St. Peter’s Evangelical Church at 1317 Oak Street. Then in 1978 the merging of The Helping Hand Institute and Goodwill Industries of Greater Kansas City formed the Helping Hand of Goodwill Industries. In 2010 the agency changed its name to Goodwill of Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas to better reflect the geographical scope of its services and programs. Today, the nonprofit agency has more than 20 locations in the Greater Kansas City area including 17 Retail Stores, two Donation Express Centers, and one Outlet Store. Ninety cents of every dollar made from selling donated items supports programs that empower local job seekers with barriers to employment to find and keep work. Don’t miss the party at a Goodwill store near you during the month of July. We’ll have prizes, crafts, face painting and more as we celebrate. Since its founding in 1901, Goodwill has always strived to give people a hand up, not a hand out. As you celebrate the Holidays this year, we would like to invite you to lend a helping hand to local job seekers with barriers to employment. Holiday Hand Ornaments are now available at all 18 of our stores in the Greater Kansas City area for only $1, $2, $5 or $10. One hundred percent of the proceeds support Goodwill’s mission. One dollar can’t buy much these days, but it can provide priceless support for the people we serve. A $1 ornament can buy a bus pass for a homeless job seeker. A $2 ornament provides job training help for a client with a disability. A $5 ornament helps provide training classes for an unemployed job seeker. A $10 ornament provides a voucher for professional interviewing attire. The feeling you get from helping local people of all abilities find meaningful work is priceless! Customers can also personalize the ornaments with the name of the person in whose honor they purchased it. What a gift to give for the Holidays! The ornaments will be displayed at your Goodwill store, though they may be taken home as well. Goodwill also offers customers a chance to round up their purchase at the register, with the extra amount going to support our mission. The Holidays offer many opportunities to do Good. We hope you’ll help us spread Goodwill.
